Sexual Abuse and Assault Awareness and Prevention Education Curriculum Training Facilitator
B.E.S.T Homes , is a Certified Love 146: Not a Number Child Trafficking and Exploitation Prevention Curriculum Training Facilitator ; for the new "Erin's Law" SB 401 passed in Georgia.
On May 8th, Gov. Nathan Deal signed SB 401 into law, which includes an amendment sponsored by Rep. Wes Cantrell (R – District 22) based on model legislation commonly referred to as “Erin’s Law,” making Georgia the 35th state to require all public schools to imple-ment age appropriate sexual abuse and assault awareness and pre-vention education for students in grades K-9. Schools are in a unique position to help young people shape positive healthy behaviors, reducing their vulnerability to being sexually abused or assaulted.
The sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention education mandated by SB 401 will reach 1.3 million students in kindergarten through ninth grade. The law started this year’s legislative session as House Bill 762. It is based on model legislation called “Erin’s law,” named after an Illinois woman who was sexually abused as a child.
SB 401 – Erin’s Law in Georgia
Revision to Code Section 20-2-143, relating to sex education and AIDS prevention instruction requires:
• Annual age-appropriate sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention education in kindergarten through grades 9;
• To provide that professional learning may include participating in or presenting at in-service training on sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention (Code Section 20-2-200);
• In-service training programs on sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention for professional personnel that will be providing instruction in annual age-appropriate sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention education in K through grade 9 (Code Section 20-2-201)
What is Erin’s Law?
Erin’s Law is named after childhood sexual assault survivor, author, speaker and activist Erin Merryn, who is the founder and President of Erin’s Law, which is registered with the State of Illinois and the IRS as a 501 (c)(4) non-profit social welfare organization.
After Erin introduced the legislation in her home state of Illinois, the bill was named “Erin’s Law” after her by legislators and it has caught on nationwide. Illinois is the first state by law to mandate child sexual abuse prevention. Vermont state board of education required this in schools since 2009. As of June 2018 Erin’s Law has been passed in 35 states.
